Ayurveda – Part V: Ayurveda Tips for Spring

According to Ayurveda in order to maintain good health it’s important to adjust our daily routines to the season in which we are. According to this medicine the environment, as for human being, has also features of doshas, which change depending on the season.

The beginning of Spring is considered a Kapha period, which began in late winter. It’s important to avoid aggravating factors for Kapha, the water and earth dosha, especially those who already have this dosha intensified.

An increase of Kapha in our body means an increase in mucus production and respiratory problems. For this reason, in Spring allergies and other typical Kapha health problems, that appear through rhinitis, sinusitis, flu, cough, asthma, are common.

There are some things we can do on a daily basis to minimize the effects of Kapha in our body.

Ayurveda recommendations for early Spring:

• Wake up when the sun goes up;

• It’s important in this period of the year to exercise to reduce the excess of Kapha, which leads to lethargy. So, even if it takes some effort to start because there’s little will, it’s recommended to do yoga, dance, run, move the body anyway. If it’s possible to do this in the morning, it would be better;

• Eat lighter food. During Winter we tend to eat heavier foods, and this can lead to the accumulation of Kapha in our physical body. Maybe your body will also start to ask for another type of foods;

• Get rid of stuff, clean the house, do the so-called “Spring cleaning”. Create space, for example, for new plants, increasing the contact with nature in your home;

• Wash your body. The beginning of Spring is the perfect time for a detox, which helps reduce the toxins accumulated in Winter. Ayurveda offers some examples of detox for this period of the year which can be done with the support of an Ayurveda therapist;

• Try to eliminate sugar, alcohol, dairy and caffeine for at least two weeks. It’s a way to restart your body;

• Increases the daily consumption of water, fresh vegetables and fruits;

• If you tend to have allergies, you can do the nasal wash with a neti pot for prevention (don’t do it as a treatment when there’s active inflammation of the nasal cavities),

• To remove the excess of Kapha from your body you can make herbal teas with ginger, cinnamon and black pepper, which are also good for the digestive system (not recommended if you’re pregnant or you have any health problems, such as hypertension, or you’re taking specific types of medication. If in doubt, talk to your doctor first).

We hope these tips are useful in this new season.
