How many times did our trusted hairdresser or any other hairdresser we just popped in tried to sell us keratin treatments?
The arguments are always the same: it’s important to take care of our hair with periodical Keratin treatments to nourish and moisturize it, so that we repair it and give it back its own shine and softness, among other benefits…
What’s Keratin then?
Keratin is a natural protein found in our hair, skin, nails and teeth. Over time and with frequent wash, this protein gets weaker. That is the reason why our hair starts to look opaque and kinky and it breaks off easily.
And what about Keratin treatments, what are them?
Even if Keratin treatments have several advantages, they’re applied using chemical products with the purpose of giving back to hair its natural protein through an artificial process. There’s something in all of it that doesn’t sound good, does it?
It’s not surprise that Keratin beauty treatments have many side effects, such as hair loss, drier and more damaged hair after wash, etc. This is all due to the high temperature of the flat iron used to let the chemical product penetrate the hairs to “repair them”.
Here’s where Nature plays an important role!
After this unpleasant explanation about how Keratin treatments work, a question arises spontaneously… Does home-made remedies to heal our hair and give it back its own shine, softness and hydration exist?
Good news! Once again, Nature is our ally and offer us a variety of solutions so that we can take care of our hair in a healthy, natural and sustainable way. Know how!

Natural ingredients, friends of our hair!
Among the natural ingredients, friends of our hair (and of the environment), you can find extra virgin olive oil, eggs, honey, raw extra virgin coconut oil, avocado, banana and almond oil.
Below, I’ve listed some tips so you can start preparing your own mask to give health back to your hair in a natural and healthy way (and you can also save money!) 🙂
1. Repairer and Fortifier: Honey
Preparation: Mix half cup of honey with 1 or 2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil. Apply the mixture on your damp hair, leave it on for 10 minutes and wash your hair with shampoo and lukewarm water.
2. Repairer and Fortifier: Banana
Preparation: Mash half banana with 1 egg energetically until reach a liquid and homogeneous mixture. Add 1 or 2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil, half lemon juice and 1 tablespoon of honey. Mix all the ingredients and apply massaging your dry hair. Leave it on for 15 minutes. Rinse it off with lukewarm water and shampoo your hair.
3. Repairer (split ends): Almond oil
Application: Apply almond oil on the inferior part of your hair (from the half-length to the dried ends). It can be mixed with other oils, but almond oil must be the main ingredient in any case. Leave it on for 30 minutes and wash your hair with shampoo and lukewarm water.
4. Reliever and Repairer: Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Preparation: Mix 2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil, 2 tablespoons of lemon juice and 2 tablespoons of water. Apply the mixture on your damp hair and leave it on for 30 minutes. Rinse it off with lukewarm water and shampoo your hair.
5. Fortifier: Egg
Eggs are rich in protein and essential fatty acids that help treat split ends. Because your hair is primarily made up of protein, eggs help strengthen the hair follicles. Plus, they will make your hair smooth, reduce tangles and enhance resistance to breakage.
Preparation: Mix 1 egg yolk with 2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil or raw extra virgin coconut oil. Leave it on for 15-30 minutes. Shampoo your hair.
6. Moisturizer and Fortifier: Avocado
Preparation: Purée half avocado and mix it with half tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil. Apply the mixture on your damp hair and massage. Leave it on for 10 minutes. Rinse it off with lukewarm water and shampoo your hair. For a more intense treatment, you can add 3 drops of rosemary or lavender essential oil.
All the masks mentioned above are moisturizing and nutritious and restore shine and softness to your hair. When you prepare them, you must mix the ingredients with a wooden spoon to avoid altering the properties of the ingredients.
This is one more example of the healing powers of Nature, and how we can heal thanks to Nature in a healthy and sustainable way.
